| We are the fourth richest country in the world, yet millions of people in Britain wake up every day in housing that is run-down, overcrowded or dangerous. Many others have lost their homes altogether. Bad housing robs us of security, health, and a fair chance in life. Shelter believes everyone should have a home. We help 100,000 people a year fight for their rights, get back on their feet, and find and keep a home. We also tackle the root causes of Britain's housing crisis by campaigning for new laws, policies and solutions. Over a million houses in Britain are unfit to live in, yet more than 90% of them are occupied and over one million children live in bad housing. Last year Shelterline received nearly 50,000 calls and deals frequently with calls from people living in chronically cramped conditions. Overcrowding causes high levels of stress and family break-up. More than half a million families in Britain live in officially overcrowded housing. As well as helping people with a housing crisis, Shelter also works to prevent homelessness before it happens: - Our network of housing aid centres and our Shelterline advisors give free, confidential - and impartial advice on housing rights. - Our case workers help people exercise their rights and our team of experienced lawyers - represent clients at all levels of the court system. - Our projects support people to sustain their tenancies, preventing future homelessness. - We confront the nation's housing crisis by lobbying MPs, MSPs, government departments, - local authorities and other agencies. - We collect evidence about homelessness and bad housing and produce hard-hitting - reports and submissions to government. - We train other agencies and individuals to raise awareness of housing issues. To be able to undertake this vital work we need the support of generous individuals and corporations and so we are delighted to be an official charity partner in the Wedding Angels project. We look forward to working with the team at Raising Angels to raise necessary funds and awareness for Shelter in the future.
